Used the status of a work order to auto assign it. This would allow Approval paths to go from Needs Approval to Approved and use the Approved status to auto assign to specified users.

So just to clarify you are looking to submit a work order with an auto assignment, but not have it go right to assigned? You still want it to follow the approval path? Let me know if I have that right.
